What information and documents will I need to complete the online application?
The following documents will be required to complete the application
- Academic Transcript
- Two letters of recommendation
- A 500-word essay on the following:
- Describe an experience from your past that has had a significant influence on who you are today and/or your plans for the future.
- A copy of your current Student Aid Report (SAR)
- Report must include the Expected Family Contribution (EFC number). To obtain the SAR with the EFC, you must submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the U.S. Department of Education at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Submit your FAFSA as soon as possible so that you can receive your SAR on time to meet the deadline.
- Semi-finalists and finalists may be asked to provide additional documentation.
Can I submit my application and follow up with the supplemental materials later?
You may only submit your final application when all parts of the application are complete. Please be sure to ask for recommendations early in the process. Your recommenders must upload their recommendations before you submit your final application.
Who can provide a reference for my scholarship application?
A recommendation should come from someone who can speak to your qualifications for receiving this scholarship. Recommendations may come from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, religious leaders, employers, supervisors, etc. The Scholarship Committee looks at the recommendations to learn more about the applicant. It is to your benefit to choose references that can provide insight into different parts of your profile, for example one letter from a teacher and one from a Scout leader.
If I applied to more than one participating school, which one do I list on the application?
List your first choice on the application. If you are chosen to receive an award, you will have a chance to change your school when you accept the award.
How much support will The Richard E. and Nancy P. Marriott Foundation Scholarship provide?
The Richard E. and Nancy P. Marriott Foundation Scholarship will provide a minimum of $1,000 to each scholarship awardee. The amount of the award varies by student and is based on several factors including the cost of attendance, financial need and the amount of other resources available to the student including other scholarships or grants received. Awards may be used to fund expenses related to obtaining an undergraduate education including tuition, fees, books and room and board.
If I am awarded The Richard E. and Nancy P. Marriott Foundation Scholarship, will I automatically receive funding to complete my degree?
No. The scholarship must be renewed each year. At the end of each academic year, the Scholarship Committee will review your grades, financial eligibility, conduct and progress toward degree attainment to determine, at the Committee’s sole discretion, whether to renew the scholarship for the next academic year. You will be required to submit a renewal application with the associated documentation. The scholarship may be renewed a maximum of three times or until the recipient attains his or her college degree, whichever occurs first. The Foundation may also, at its sole discretion, revoke a scholarship during the academic year based on a similar review.
Will I be liable for taxes on the scholarship?
As a scholarship recipient, you are responsible for taxes, if any, that may be assessed against your scholarship award. Scholarship funds used exclusively for the payment of tuition, fees and books are normally not taxable. However, we recommend consulting your tax advisor for more guidance.
Are there any restrictions on the scholarship awards?
Scholarship checks are made out to the applicable institution, not to the student. Awards may only be used to fund expenses directly related to obtaining an undergraduate education. A transfer of funds to another participating institution will be handled on a case by case basis and must be approved by the Scholarship Committee.
If you withdraw from the participating university or fail to maintain full-time status, any unused scholarship funds must be returned to The Richard E. and Nancy P. Marriott Foundation.
